Hello, my name is Ms. Chen. I am a sixth grade mathematics teacher here at Mariano Azuela. As a child of Chinese-American immigrants, I believe that all children deserve opportunities and resources to reach for their dreams and become America's future leaders. I teach mathematics because i believe that strong mathematics as well as literacy skills allow our students to be internationally competitive and successful. Because it truly takes a village to nurture and raise a well-rounded child, my door is always open to parents and the community.
Prior to joining the field of teaching, I graduated from the University of Chicago with a major in Economics and a minor in East Asian studies. As a product of CPS, I also graduated from Walter Payton College Prep High School and went to Mark Sheridan Academy for my elementary/ junior high years. In the past, I was also a community organizer in the Chinatown neighborhood and provided support for others in Little Village and Pilsen. Besides teaching mathematics, I love to travel around the United States and the world to experience and learn about new cultures. I recently (April 2016) had the opportunity to take 10 traveling scholars from Mariano Azuela to Santiago, Chile. We learned so much about the Chilean education system, and we had a chance to experience their beautiful culture. I also attend church regularly, and have taught Sunday School for many years. I enjoy studying Asian American and world history, playing volleyball, singing, cooking, baking, and dancing. |
