Our School

History
Azuela’s inaugural year was in 2010. We are a proud member of Chicago’s West Lawn Community.  The building structure is made of recycled materials that contribute to an ecofriendly and energy efficient building. One example of this is how the electricity works with the natural light. As natural light comes in, the lights adjust in brightness to conserve energy. Lighting operates with sensors to ensure lights turn off when the space is not in use. Azuela is home to a green roof. Green roofs can improve storm water management by reducing runoff and improving water quality, conserve energy, increase longevity of roofing membranes, reduce noise, and air pollution.

Achievements and Initiatives
Azuela is home of the AZTECS! Since its opening we have been on a path toward excellence. Over the years we have been recipients of several awards and have had the honor of participating in different initiatives through the Board of Education.
Azuela is a Computer Science for All (CS4All) school – CS4All is an innovative Computer Science education program that provides equity, empowerment, and opportunities that maximize the innate potential of every student. Our students will become global citizens who understand the ubiquity of computing. Students will be able to use their knowledge to join the ranks of those who embrace technology, to revolutionize their communities, our nation, and the world. The website is a central hub for all things related to Computer Science in the district and provides information on opportunities and resources for students, educators, community members, and partners. Our school operates with two computer labs and offers STEM classes throughout the year.
In school year 2016-2017 Azuela began its Dual Language Program. In our path toward excellence, our vision is to guide our students in becoming bi-lingual and bi-literate citizens in order to compete in a global society.
Azuela participates in Chicago Public School Health and Wellness initiative. The CPS Health Education Scope and Sequence covers nine health topic areas: Alcohol and Other Drugs, Healthy Eating*, Mental and Emotional Health, Personal Health and Wellness, Physical Activity*, Safety and Injury Prevention, Sexual Health*, Tobacco, and Violence Prevention. The Health Education Scope and Sequence provides benchmarks and sequential learning expectations for all nine health topic areas in four grade bands: Prek-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. The Office of Student Health and Wellness developed this tool using the National Health Education Standards (NHES) and the Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (HECAT) as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Partnerships
Our success as a community school cannot happen without the help and support of our community partners. Daley Community College offers programs throughout the summer for our students, parents, and community. We participate in yearly transition programs with Daley’s preschool program.
Metropolitan Services is nestled in the West Lawn Community and provides counseling services to our students and families.
Legacy Insurance and Investment Group Great Program – Our students have the opportunity to learn about career paths and self-improvement through our GREAT Mentoring program. Students have an opportunity to become recipients of school scholarships upon graduation. North Eastern Illinois University (NEIU) provides the Arts through Cultural Experiences program and work directly with our teachers and students.
Azuela teachers have been mentor teachers to aspiring students teachers from different colleges and universities such as NEIU, Roosevelt, and University of Chicago.
Autumn Green partners with us to provide students opportunities to participate in giving back to the community through community service. Our students participate different visits throughout the school year.
Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP) has led an initiative to increase parent involvement and leadership at local public elementary schools through the Parents as Mentor program. Each year, parent mentors commit to participating in their child’s school by volunteering 100 hours a semester, two hours a day, four days a week. The parent mentors are assigned to a classroom to work one-on-one and in small group settings with students. Parent mentors are active in instruction, skill development and reviewing key concepts with the children.
Legat Architects has been around since 1964. Through this partnership our students participate in our Architect Club afterschool learning about the field of architecture and participating in hands on activities and projects.
Communities In Schools (CIS) of Chicago offers a solution by connecting students and their families with programs and services – at no cost – that address students’ unmet needs. These can range from physicals and immunizations and theater performances, to violence prevention education and mental health care, to targeted,one-on-one, case-managed support for students most at risk of leaving school.
International Student Exchange Program - At Azuela we create opportunities for students to explore the world through culture and education visiting our sister schools in different countries. Our students have an opportunity to participate in Student Exchange Programs to South Korea, Chile, and Mexico. During their travels, students attend daily classes at our sister school, go on cultural experiences, establish friendships, and learn about education and culture in different countries.
Chicago Park District offers after school programming for our students and their families.
